Looking Great! But at What Expense?

We live in a society where there are very high standards put on us to look great. We will spend tons of time and money ensuring that we get the appearance that we think society wants us to have. But at what expense? The high importance that we put on the way we look has social, mental, emotional and chemical ramifications.

When we focus on how society and others want us to look and act, we lose sight of the way that we want to live our own lives and the value and worth that we hold for ourselves. This causes unnecessary stress and worry because we are focusing on things that are not only not important to us, but not us at all. Trying to be someone that we’re not is exhausting!

When we try so hard to look a certain way, there are different things that we use… from lotions and makeup and perfumes, all of these things we put on our body actually get absorbed into the skin. Our skin will absorb anywhere from 20-100% of what’s put on it. So when we’re lathering ourselves with chemicals and toxins (found in routine, day-to-day care products) those chemicals get absorbed into our body. Symptoms from toxic overload in our body can be things like fatigue, joint and muscle pain, congestion, headaches, bloating and more. With the chance of symptoms like this, it’s important to make sure that we’re reducing our risk of exposure as much as we possibly can as well as following protocols to detox our bodies. And, while specific chiropractic wellness care from your favorite chiropractor can help to alleviate these symptoms by allowing your body to function and heal at its best, when you continue to put the toxins into your body, those symptoms won’t truly ever go away.

So, what kind of things do you need to look out for in your products (and products will be things like soap, toothpaste, makeup, cleaning products, lotions, etc)? Top chemicals that are found in your products are: lead, mercury, artificial colourants, sulfate, phthalates, parabens, glycols, triclosan, BHA, BHT, fluoride and more… The best way to find products that are safe to use are ones that use natural ingredients (like coconut or almond oil, essential oils, or vitamin E).

Starting to transition your products can seem daunting and a lot of work in the beginning, but once you find your favorites, it’s easy!
